How do Hamac cloth diapers work?
We explain in a few short steps how to use cloth diapers, although it is very easy:
- Choose a type of diaper:
a) Classic diaper (all-in-one diaper)
b) T.MAC diaper (separable diaper)
- Place the absorbent inside the diaper. You can choose between:
a) Washable Absorbents
– Bio cotton absorbent
– Microfiber night absorber
b) Disposable Absorbents
- Place a veil on top of the absorbent
- You are ready to put it on the baby!
Once used:
- Remove the veil with the pee and / or the poop and throw it directly in the trash
- The diaper and absorbent can be washed together in the washing machine with the rest of the laundry. In case of using disposable absorbents these will go directly to the trash
What kind of diaper to choose?
You can choose between two different diaper models:
Classic diaper
It is an all-in-one diaper, similar to a conventional disposable diaper. It consists of the cover (very soft microfiber outer part) and a waterproof inner part (hammock). You only have to add the absorbent inside the diaper (hammock) and place a veil on top to prevent the absorbent from getting dirty directly. Once you change the diaper to the baby the veil will go directly to the trash and the rest of the diaper to the washing machine.
Diaper T.MAC
It is a separable diaper, more hygienic and ecological. Like the classic diaper, it is composed of a soft microfiber cover (outside of the diaper (Source)), but the difference is that the waterproof bag in which the absorbent (hammock) is placed is removable. That is, you can separate the hammock from the cover to wash it every time it gets dirty. The operation is the same as that of the classic diaper: you add the absorbent inside the hammock along with a veil on top to more easily collect dirt. Once the diaper is used, you will have to throw the veil directly in the trash, For the rest of the diaper you can wash it in the washing machine, but if the cover has not been stained you can use it again immediately with another clean hammock. This way you will save time and washes.
What accessories are necessary to have a full diaper?
- Absorbent
Absorbents are the most important part because without them the diaper would not make sense. They have the function of retaining the pee and dirt so that the baby can be clean and dry with maximum comfort. You can choose between different types of absorbents depending on the quality, duration, or comfort you demand.
If what matters to you is the quality and well-being of your little one, the best option will be to choose organic cotton absorbents. They are composed of certified natural fibers, which guarantees that they are totally careful with the baby’s skin and ass. They have a great absorption thanks to their triple-layer, keeping the baby clean and dry for longer. They are also the most ecological option because they are washable and reusable, so you can use them as many times as you want. We recommend that you have several replacement absorbent units because after washing it takes about 12 hours to dry outdoors, although you can put them in the dryer without a problem.
If you want a long duration so that your baby is limited and dry for many hours, we recommend the special absorbent for the night. Its 4-layer microfiber design guarantees up to 12 hours of absorption, which makes it perfect for use at night or during nap hours. Like bio cotton absorbents, it is washable and reusable and you can use it in a dryer.
If you are looking for comfort and speed for everyday life, the type of absorbents most appropriate for you are disposable absorbents. Although it is the least ecological option and recommended by us, it is true that sometimes it is the most useful. Especially on those occasions when we are traveling, away from home, or when we leave our little one to the care of another person. Anyway, you should not worry and you can use them without a problem for your baby because they do not contain gels or chemicals that can cause harm. Although whenever you can it is preferable to use washable and reusable absorbents since they are a much healthier and greener alternative.
2. Veils
The veils are a kind of wipes that are placed on top of the absorbent so that the pee and dirt do not come in contact with it and avoid staining. You just have to place the veil over the absorbent, making sure that no corner protrudes. You do not need to use them, you can use the diaper only with absorbents, but the veil will allow you to better collect the pee and/or poop to throw it directly in the trash and will facilitate the washing of the diaper and the absorbent. Even if the veil has only been wet from pee, you can wash it in the washing machine up to 2 or 3 times.
3. Inner hammock (only for diaper T.MAC)
f you decide to use the T.MAC separable diaper you need to buy a pack of two hammocks separately. It is a kind of waterproof bag that forms the inside of the diaper and in which the absorbents are placed. It is very easy and quick to put. In the end, it has two eyelashes that are attached to the cover so you can put it on and take it off whenever you want. It has rubber bands on the sides, which makes the diaper perfectly fit the baby’s legs, just like a normal disposable diaper. The T.MAC diaper and the classic diaper work totally the same, with the only difference that the T.MAC has the possibility of separating the hammock (inner part) so you can wash it together with the absorbent and thus be able to use the cover (outside) immediately after the diaper change,
4. 2 in 1 bag
The bag is a complement that will help you store diapers and accessories in the same place when you have to carry your baby’s things. You can also use it to wash all diapers and absorbents together in the washing machine and prevent them from mixing with the rest of the laundry.
5. Portable changer
The changing table is an essential accessory in everyday life to take it wherever you go with your baby. More and more places are those that have a bathroom or adapted room in which to change the diaper to the little ones, but it never hurts to carry it in the stroller bag in case you have no place to change the baby. It is foldable and lightweight so you can store it without a problem, and soft and soft so that the baby is always comfortable.
How many cloth diapers does a baby need to have?
From the time the baby is born until he learns to pee without a diaper, he will need 2 or 3 different diaper sizes, although it will depend on the size and growth of the baby. Normally, it is recommended to have 5 different cloth diapers for each size, so surely the baby needs 10 to 15 diapers in total. It will also depend on the number of times you have to change the baby’s diaper and how often you wash diapers and absorbents. Similarly, the type of diaper you use will also influence the classic diaper or separable T.MAC diaper.
Like diapers, you will need different sizes of washable absorbents, so the baby will have approximately 12 absorbents per size. Here is an approximate example for each type of diaper so you can get the idea of the number of diapers your baby will need if you wash them every 2 days:
With the classic diaper:
– Size S → 6-7 cloth diapers and 12-14 washable absorbents T1
– Size M → 5-6 cloth diapers and 10-12 washable absorbents T2
– Size L → 4-5 cloth diapers and 10-12 washable absorbents T2
With the separable diaper T.MAC:
– Size S → 3-4 covers, 6-7 T.MAC hammocks, and 12-14 washable absorbents T1
– Size M → 2-3 covers, 5-6 hammocks T.MAC and 10-12 washable absorbents T2
– Size L → 2-3 covers, 4-5 hammocks T.MAC, 10-12 washable absorbents T2
How often are cloth diapers changed?
Cloth diapers do not have the same absorption power as disposable diapers. This is because they do not contain any type of super absorbent gel. Most conventional diapers that we can find in the supermarket contain gels and chemicals such as endocrine disruptors. The latter is a type of molecule harmful to the skin when they come in contact with it, even more so for the thin and sensitive skin of babies. Hamac cloth diapers are subject to control that determines that the materials and fabrics do not have any toxic substance that can damage the skin of the little ones. At the same time, they have an anti-leak system and guarantee up to 3 and 4 hours of absorption.
Undoubtedly, it is preferable for your baby to use ecological and healthy cloth diapers for her delicate skin. It doesn’t matter so much how many times you have to change your baby’s diaper, but the most important thing is that she is safe and her health is not in any danger.
How to wash cloth diapers?
You can wash your baby’s cloth diapers along with the rest of the clothes in the washing machine, although it is important that you take into account a series of indications :
- If the cover is not dirty, you can rinse it with soap and water and let it dry to reuse it later.
- All diaper elements (both classic and T.MAC) are washable at 40 ° C. The absorbent can be washed at 60 ° C, but at 40 ° C with detergent is sufficient.
- Do not use products that contain alcohol, disinfectants, bleach or abrasives (for example, bleach or chlorine); they damage the diaper and can make it permeable.
- It is recommended not to use detergents containing bleaches or optical brighteners with more than 5% polycarboxylate or phosphonate, and more than 5% perfume.
- When you wash the diaper use programs with a gentle spin (600-800 revolutions / minute)
- It is advisable to wash diapers with similar colors.
- Do not put diapers in the dryer, as it causes aging and tissue wear. However, in the case of washable absorbents it is recommended, since the dryer opens the fibers and improves absorption.
- The use of softener or glycerin-based fatty detergents (such as Marseille soap) in the washing of absorbents is not recommended, since they decrease their effectiveness. Better use non-fatty products
